Heliotropes
Heliotropism is a phenomenon observed in plants and in some animals where they orient themselves in response to the direction of sunlight. The term "heliotropism" is derived from the Greek words "helios," meaning sun, and "tropos," meaning turning or bending.
It is this gesture of being inclined towards the light, or rather its symbolic meaning what inspires this series. We are creatures endowed with the incredible capacity of being able to recognize, articulate and even create truth beauty and goodness and that quest is always at the centre of my work. As indicated in the name “tropos”, movement is also central to these pieces, the drawings are approached in a gestural manner that is consequent with my background as a dancer, and they are a constant quest for a kind of presence or sincerity that is required for their genesis. The works are also representative of elements such as recurrence, repetition and an almost constant allusion to the circle, these elements and symbols are understood and recorded throughout our history to be both tools to aid our quest as well as sources of meaning. My approach when it comes to the incorporation of this elements into my work is tied to the process where the realization of the piece itself becomes a meditative activity where this convergence gives birth to fresh work.
